About Us:

The Australian Flag Society is a national, non-profit organisation that was formed in 2003 by a group of concerned Australians in response to proposals for the design of the Australian National Flag to be reviewed by a parliamentary committee and a new flag adopted by an Act of the Commonwealth parliament without the Australian people being consulted via a National Flag Poll.

The Society is voluntarily managed and has no political affiliations.

Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Newton MBE was a guest at Government House, Canberra for Flag Day 2001 during the Centenary of Federation. He served in the 2/17th Infantry Battalion during the Siege of Tobruk. Their motto was: "What we have, we hold!"

Mr Newton was the inaugural patron of the Australian Flag Society.

Commonwealth of Australia

The Australian Aboriginal Flag since 1995, was first flown in 1971. In Australia where political correctness is a major force this yellow, black over red defaced horizontal bicolour is common. In 1997 Harold Thomas was given a back dated copyright to the design by a federal court; it is said he wasn't able to provide any direct evidence to support his competing claim.

Several sources have claimed that in fact a Maori man from New Zealand has the original patent.
